ABOUT US
Costain Heritage is directed by Fritha Costain.
We specialise in consultancy services for the heritage and museum sector. We also undertake projects for non-heritage organisations where heritage is the project focus.
Costain Heritage is based in Dorset. We undertake work for clients anywhere in the United Kingdom, and have delivered projects from Aberdeen to London. We have also, on occasion, taken on projects located outside the UK.
SOME PAST PROJECTS
HILL HOUSE BOX
While working for National Trust for Scotland, Fritha led the team that devised and delivered the extraordinary Hill House Box. The Box is delivers protection during essential structural repairs, but is also a remarkable piece of public art. It has proved extremely popular with visitors and reviewers in the press.
AMERICAN MUSEUM CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
While employed by the American Museum & Gardens, Fritha instigated and delivered a hugely successful Christmas lights offer. The event outperformed competitors and made a substantial profit in year one.
IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM
Costain Heritage developed a Master Plan for the entire Estate of the Imperial War Museum. This work involved determining the best ways to overcome a number of key issues, including collection storage, income generation, reduced running costs, revised building use, and more efficient staff accommodation.
ROMAN BATHS
This project was to determine whether an additional new attraction at the Roman Baths would be successful. Work included a market and financial assessment, together with the development of concepts for the proposed new attraction.
TIVOLI THEATRE
The project required the preparation of an audience development plan for this 1870s theatre prior to the submission of an application for a Heritage Lottery Fund grant.
LJUBLJANA PROCESS
We worked with the Council of Europe to assist the nine Balkan countries to enable rehabilitation through redevelopment of their heritage. The project aimed to help each nation prepare strategic documentation such as preliminary technical assessments, business plans and feasibility studies, to enable them to apply for funding for restoration work.
STOWE GARDENS
Through this project for the National Trust we delivered an options appraisal and feasibility study for a new visitor centre.
